‘Dopesick’ Debuts a New Trailer Starring Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton stars as a doctor whose patients wind up addicted to opioids thanks to OxyContin in Hulu’s original limited series, Dopesick. The new two-minute trailer introduces Keaton and the other key players involved in the struggle to hold Big Pharma – and specifically Purdue – accountable for the thousands of deaths caused by a drug the makers advertised as being non-addictive.

In addition to Oscar nominee Michael Keaton (Birdman), the cast includes Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, Will Poulter, John Hoogenakker, Kaitlyn Dever, and Rosario Dawson. Phillipa Soo and Jake McDorman guest star.

The limited series is inspired by Beth Macy’s New York Times bestselling book and was adapted by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong (Recount, Game Change). Oscar winner Barry Levinson (Rain Main) directs and executive produces along with Strong, Keaton, John Goldwyn, Warren Littlefield, Beth Macy, and Karen Rosenfelt.

The first three episodes of Dopesick will be released on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. Additional episodes of the eight-episode limited series arrive on subsequent Wednesdays.

The Plot:

Dopesick examines how one company triggered the worst drug epidemic in American history. The series takes viewers to the epicenter of America’s struggle with opioid addiction, from the boardrooms of Big Pharma, to a distressed Virginia mining community, to the hallways of the DEA. Defying all the odds, heroes will emerge in an intense and thrilling ride to take down the craven corporate forces behind this national crisis and their allies.

‘Ordinary Joe’ Season 1 Preview: Plot, Photos, Cast and Air Date

NBC’s new fall series Ordinary Joe, starring James Wolk as the titular character, will premiere on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT. The one-hour drama follows Joe’s life as played out in three separate stories. In one story Joe’s decision of what to pursue after college leads him to follow in his family’s footsteps into law enforcement. Another story finds Joe becoming a nurse, while the third story shows Joe’s chosen to embrace his love of music.

Writer/director Matt Reeves, who’s currently hard at work on finishing up The Batman with Robert Pattinson, wrote a script for Ordinary Joe back in 2007. Reeves never moved forward on the project because he was kept busy with Cloverfield instead, and a decade-plus later Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner learned about the script from 20th Television. Friend and Lerner spoke with Reeves, learned of his very personal connection to the story, and then finessed the series into something that incorporated important aspects of their own lives.

Reeves remains involved with Ordinary Joe as an executive producer alongside writers Friend and Lerner. Adam Kassan, Rafi Crohn, and Howard Klein are also involved as executive producers.

In addition to James Wolk (Tell Me a Story, Watchmen), the season one cast includes Charlie Barnett (You) as Eric Payne, Elizabeth Lail (Gossip Girl) as Jenny Banks, and Natalie Martinez (The Fugitive) as Amy Kindelan.

The Plot, Courtesy of NBC:

Life is all about the choices you make – and sometimes what you do in a single moment can change everything. This new heartfelt, life-affirming drama follows Joe Kimbreau, who faces one of these decisions at his college graduation. The three parallel stories that diverge from that night find Joe and the people around him with different careers, relationships and family lives, showing the unexpected ways that things change – and stay the same. But when it comes down to it, there is no “right” choice; no matter what happens, Joe’s life is always messy, exciting, tough, unpredictable … and beautiful.

“Way Leads to Way” Episode One – After his college graduation, Joe Kimbreau is faced with a pivotal decision that steers his life down three drastically different paths.

Emily Deschanel has signed on to star in the Netflix limited series Devil in Ohio, based on the bestselling book by Daria Polatin. Polatin (Jack Ryan, Hunters) is on board to guide the series adaptation as showrunner and executive producer.

According to Netflix’s official announcement, the limited series will consist of eight 45-minute episodes. Production is currently underway in Vancouver, with John Fawcett, Brad Anderson, Leslie Hope, and Steve Adelson confirmed as directors.

Additional cast members include Sam Jaeger as ‘Peter,’ Gerardo Celasco as ‘Detective Lopez,’ Madeleine Arthur as ‘Mae’, Xaria Dotson as ‘Jules,’ Alisha Newton as ‘Helen,’ and Naomi Tan as ‘Dani.’

Netflix released this synopsis of the series:

“When hospital psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis shelters a mysterious cult escapee, her world is turned upside down as the strange girl’s arrival threatens to tear her own family apart.”

In an October 2017 interview with Horror Fuel, Polatin discussed why she decided to write Devil in Ohio after working as a writer on series including Weeds and Shut Eye. “Because I work in mediums, I am always looking for the right medium for the right story. I wrote a pilot about a cult and I was interested in these kinds of isolated communities and what they did to somebody. A producer friend brought me the true story of this young woman who had escaped from a satanic cult and had moved in with her psychiatrist’s family. So I felt like a novel was the best way to tell that story,” explained Polatin.

LAIKA announced production is now underway on their next animated film, Wildwood. The film is based on The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy’s bestselling novel, illustrated by Carson Ellis, and has LAIKA’s President & CEO Travis Knight on board to direct.

Knight directed the studio’s Kubo and the Two Strings which was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Animated Feature Film, Best Achievement in Visual Effects).

“As a deep-dyed native son of Oregon, I have rainwater, microbrew, and fair-trade coffee coursing through my veins,” said Knight. “With Wildwood, I have the opportunity to tell a madly ambitious story of magic, wonder, and danger set in the place I grew up. My very own Portland will join that pantheon of unforgettable fantasy realms, with a stirring epic that will kindle imaginations, lift spirits, and break hearts.”

Knight added, “Colin and Carson’s novel is a lyrical work of art. The entire LAIKA family is fully committed to honoring it with a film of breathtaking spectacle and aching beauty. I can’t wait to share it with the world. Although we’re doing this in stop-motion, so, you know, I’ll have to.”

LAIKA released the following description of Wildwood:

“Beyond Portland’s city limits lies Wildwood. You’re not supposed to go there. You’re not even supposed to know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland. Her baby brother Mac has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, and she – along with her hapless classmate Curtis – is going to get him back. Prue might think she’s too old for fairytales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one. One filled with strange talking animals, roguish bandits, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions.

Wildwood is a tale of love, loss, sacrifice and secrets, and of the magic you can find on your doorstep, if you’re willing to look for it.”

Wildwood marks six-time Oscar nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel’s first fully animated feature film.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Earns a Season 2 Order from Hulu

Only Murders in the Building Cast
Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) in ‘Only Murders in the Building’ (Photo by Craig Blankenhorn / Hulu)

Steve Martin and John Hoffman’s Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a second season by Hulu. The 10 episode first season debuted on August 31, 2021 and snagged the highest ratings of any comedy on its premiere day.

Martin and Hoffman co-created the Hulu Original comedy series and serve as writers and executive producers. Martin also stars in the series alongside Martin Short and Selena Gomez. The first season cast also includes Aaron Dominguez, Vanessa Aspillaga, Ryan Broussard, Jeena Yi, and Michael Cyril Creighton.

“Everyone in our amazing Building worked with such love and expertise through extraordinary times — and with incredible support from Disney, Hulu and 20th TV — to create a first season that might live up to our legendary cast, our beloved New York City, and to make a show about connection. To feel we’ve connected with our audience and hit the mark enough already to have the chance to continue — and to carry on our show’s wild ride of mystery-comedy-empathy — is too exciting for words. So I’ll shut up now — and just say a huge thanks to all and I can’t wait for more!” stated co-creator/executive producer John Hoffman.

Executive producer Dan Fogelman (This Is Us) added, “If you’d told 15-year-old me that I’d Zoom multiple times this week with Steve Martin and Martin Short to celebrate our show’s launch, I would have asked ‘What’s Zoom?’ But this is still all incredibly exciting. I’m so proud of all involved and grateful to Dana, Craig and Karey, and our fantastic partners at Disney, 20th and Hulu.”

“There has been something about this project that felt almost fated from the start; from Dan’s first lunch with Steve in which Steve happened to mention he had an idea for a series, to John jumping aboard to co-create it, to Steve’s agreeing to star but only if Marty joined him, to the inspired addition of Selena. The comedy this team delivered has been the obsession of every executive at this studio, and our friends at Hulu have treated it like the crown jewel that it is. And now, thanks to the incredible audience response, we are so happy to say there will be more murders in the building — which is great news for everyone, except perhaps the residents of the Arconia,” said Karey Burke, president, 20th Television.

The Season 1 Plot, Courtesy of Hulu:

Only Murders in the Building follows three strangers (Martin, Short, and Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth.

As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, the three unravel the complex secrets of the building which stretch back years. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another. Soon, the endangered trio comes to realize a killer might be living amongst them as they race to decipher the mounting clues before it’s too late.

‘Trial in the Outback’ Revisits Australia’s Infamous Dingo Case

Trial in the Outback

The true crime documentary series Trial in the Outback: The Lindy Chamberlain Story arrives for US and Canadian audiences on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 via Sundance Now and AMC+. The docuseries offers an in-depth examination of the case made famous in the 1988 film, A Cry in the Dark. Meryl Streep earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the mother, Lindy Chamberlain, who claimed a dingo killed her baby girl.

All three episodes of the docuseries will be available for binge-watching on October 12th.

Mark Joffe (Working Class Boy) directed and Francine Finnane (Vietnam) served as writer. The true crime docuseries was produced by Empress Road and Easy Tiger Productions.

Sundance Now released the following synopsis along with episode descriptions:

Trial in the Outback: The Lindy Chamberlain Story explores the case that has figured in Australia’s collective conscious since 1980, when a dingo took Lindy Chamberlain’s defenseless baby in a random horrific attack. But it quickly turned into more than that, resulting in the trial of the century and Australia’s most notorious miscarriage of justice. Through interviews with Lindy, her children and eyewitnesses today, archival footage and broadcasts and – for the first time – access to Lindy’s personal archive of family stills, movies, audio recordings and letters, the series is a compelling universal story that still resonates today.

  • Episode One
The tragic loss of Azaria Chamberlain to a dingo in the Australian outback is turned on its head by a sensationalist media, a disbelieving public, an aggrieved Territory government and its biased police, all combining to send her mother, Lindy, to trial for her murder.
  • Episode Two
An obsessed and divided Australia watches the trial of the century as facts and eyewitnesses are disregarded, false forensic evidence is presented and a provincial jury is swayed to convict Lindy for murder, sentencing her to life in prison with hard labor.
  • Episode Three
Three years into her life sentence, following an intense public campaign and the confluence of extraordinary events, Lindy Chamberlain is suddenly released from prison but the fight for justice for her and her family continues, taking her story through to the present day, 40 years after the tragic death of her daughter Azaria.

Netflix is developing a series based on Matt Wagner’s award-winning comic book series Grendel. The streaming service announced they’ve greenlit the series and tapped Abubakr Ali (Power Book II: Ghost) to star as vigilante hero Grendel/Hunter Rose.

Per Netflix, Grendel “follows Hunter Rose, a gifted fencer, writer, and assassin as, seeking to avenge the death of a lost love, he goes to war with New York’s criminal underworld, only to realize…why beat them when you can join them?”

Andrew Dabb (Supernatural) is on board as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the eight-episode first season. Comic book creator Matt Wagner will be involved as an executive producer along with Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson (The Umbrella Academy, Hellboy), Keith Goldberg (The Umbrella Academy, Resident Alien), and Chris Tongue (Polar, Splinter).

“I couldn’t be more thrilled about the Grendel saga, one of the longest-running independent comics series, finally being translated into live-action for the screen,” said Wagner. “Under the sharp guidance of showrunner Andrew Dabb, our incredible creative team, sure-to-be stellar cast and Dark Horse Entertainment have teamed with Netflix to produce this provocative adaptation that will bring my characters and concepts to an all new audience and yet still provide excitement and surprises for die-hard fans. I’m especially excited to see Abubakr Ali bring the character of Grendel/Hunter Rose to life — he has the charisma, style and vital edginess that I’ve been envisioning in the role for years.”

Season one will also star Jaime Ray Newman (Dopesick) as “Jocasta Rose,” Julian Black Antelope (The Flash) as “Argent,” Madeline Zima (Californication) as “Liz Sparks,” and Kevin Corrigan (Scenes from an Empty Church) as “Barry Palumbo.” Emma Ho (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) will play “Stacy Palumbo,” Erik Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) is “Teddy Ciccone,” Brittany Allen (What Keeps You Alive) plays “Annabelle Wright,” and Andy Mientus (The Flash) stars as “Larry Stohler.”
