First Look: ‘The Irishman’ Teaser Trailer with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino

Netflix just released the first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s much-anticipated and long-awaited Jimmy Hoffa drama, The Irishman. The two-minute trailer shows off the visual effects de-aging process, letting the audience get a glimpse of a younger Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.

The Irishman marks the ninth feature film Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese have collaborated on as actor and director, with the most recent prior to this gritty drama being Casino in 1995. News of a Jimmy Hoffa film first hit back in 2008, and Scorsese’s finally set to unveil the project this fall on Netflix and in select theaters.

The cast includes Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, and Anna Paquin. Stephen Graham, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Jack Huston, Kathrine Narducci, Jesse Plemons, Domenick Lombardozzi, Paul Herman, Gary Basaraba, and Marin Ireland are also featured in Scorsese’s The Irishman.

Steven Zaillan adapted Charles Brandt’s 2003 book, I Heard You Paint Houses, for the screen. Scorsese, De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Irwin Winkler, Gerald Chamales, Gaston Pavlovich, and Randall Emmett produce.

Martin Scorsese’s behind the scenes team includes director of photography Rodrigo Prieto, production designer Bob Shaw, costume designers Christopher Peterson and Sandy Powell, and editor Thelma Schoonmaker. Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic was tapped to transform De Niro and the cast into younger versions of themselves for flashbacks.

The Plot:

“Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci star in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, an epic saga of organized crime in post-war America told through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler and hitman who worked alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century. Spanning decades, the film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organized crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.”

‘The Hunt’ Trailer: ‘GLOW’s Betty Gilpin Fights for Her Life

It’s easy to get confused about who’s the hunter and who’s being hunted in the official trailer for The Hunt. Blumhouse Productions’ two-minute trailer teases a lethal game, lots of gruesome deaths, and even throws in an adorable pig for good measure. Not sure who’s side the pig’s on, but here’s hoping he’s not in the “being hunted” category.

The cast includes Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project), Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Emma Roberts (American Horror Story), and Hilary Swank (Trust). Justin Hartley (This Is Us), Ethan Suplee (Santa Clarita Diet), and Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) also star in the action thriller.

Craig Zobel (Z for Zachariah, The Leftovers) directed from a screenplay by The Leftovers team of Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse. Lindelof and Jason Blum produce, with Craig Zobel, Nick Cuse, and Steven R. Molen executive producing.

Zobel’s behind the scenes team consists of director of photography Darran Tiernan, production designer Matthew Munn, and costume designer David Tabbert.

Universal Pictures will open The Hunt in theaters on September 27, 2019.

The Hunt Plot:

“Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen… for a very specific purpose … The Hunt.

In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a bunch of elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt humans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of the hunted, Crystal (Gilpin), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (Swank) at the center of it all.”

‘The Lighthouse’ First Trailer Starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe

A24 just released the first riveting trailer for the horror fantasy, The Lighthouse. The film’s a two-hander starring Robert Pattinson (recently named as the new Batman) and four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe.

The Lighthouse was directed by Robert Eggers, the filmmaker behind the gothic horror story The Witch. Robert Eggers co-wrote the screenplay with Max Eggers. Rodrigo Teixeira, Jay Van Hoy, Lourenço Sant’ Anna, and Youree Henley served as producers.

A limited release will launch on October 18, 2019 (New York/Los Angeles) followed by an expansion in other cities.

In addition to winning the coveted role of Batman in The Batman, Robert Pattinson recently completed Waiting for the Barbarians with Johnny Depp. Pattinson also recently wrapped up work on The King with Timothée Chalamet and The Devil All the Time with Tom Holland. He’s currently shooting Tenet written and directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy). His performances post-Twilight have confirmed there’s more to the British actor than playing a sparkly vegetarian vampire.

Willem Dafoe earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his roles in At Eternity’s Gate, released in 2018. He also picked up three Best Supporting Actor nominations for his performances in The Florida Project, Shadow of the Vampire, and Platoon. He’ll next be seen in Motherless Brooklyn directed by Edward Norton and co-starring Norton and Bruce Willis.

The Plot:

“From Robert Eggers, the visionary filmmaker behind modern horror masterpiece The Witch, comes this hypnotic and hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.”

‘Stumptown’ Interview: Cobie Smulders on Tackling a Complicated Character

Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, Friends from College) takes on the lead role in ABC’s upcoming series, Stumptown, debuting this fall. The series is based on the comic books by Greg Rucka and follows Smulders as Dex Parios, a character described as “strong, assertive and sharp-witted army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon. Her military intelligence skills make her a great PI, but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police.”

Smulders joined the Stumptown cast and Greg Rucka at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con to promote the show’s September 25, 2019 premiere. In our roundtable interview, Smulders explained why she was attracted to playing Dex and what viewers can expect from the first season.

Greg Rucka says you nailed every aspect of Dex. What was your entry point into the character? What did you fall in love with?

Cobie Smulders: “First of all, thank you, Greg! You know, I read the script first – the pilot script – and then I went, ‘This is based on a graphic novel. What’s the novel?’ And then I read the four that he wrote and it really sold me on the project because I could get from the graphic novel so clearly what was this world was, how this character moves in that world, and the other characters that are involved.

It’s just really cool. I mean, I’ve been very lucky. As an actor, you don’t very often get the opportunity to say a joke, punch a guy in the face, and then do a crazy, dramatic scene about loss. You don’t get to do that often. It’s a very rare thing to be involved with something where you’re playing all of these different notes. It very rarely comes along, so I’m really excited about exploring it.

We’re at the very beginning, beginning stages that are building on what we established in our pilot which is this group of misfits living in Portland all sort of trying to get along.”

It seems there was a sort of possible “will they or won’t they” romance teased. Can you talk about that?

Cobie Smulders: “When I hear ‘will they or won’t they,’ I just like don’t… This place where we are with this character, Dex, I think she’s completely incapable of a relationship. So, obviously that complicates the situation when people are talking about the triangle between Detective Hoffman (played by Michael Ealy), myself, and Grey (played by Jake Johnson).

The relationship with Grey is that we came up together. We grew up together. He is amazingly helpful with raising my brother which I’ve been sort of saddled with. And, that has a weird emotional history. But the current one with Hoffman, I just feel like she’s not able to commit to anything. She’s not able to commit to anything in her life. We’re just starting her on this path of being a private investigator and it’s the first thing that she’s probably ever tried to commit to since she went into the military.”

Producer David Bernad: “I think it’s important to say the character isn’t defined by those male relationships and it’s definitely not something she’s seeking out. I think it’s an aspect of her life but it’s a really a show that explores her character going through an existential crisis and trying to reconcile her PTSD and kind of figuring out what she wants her life to be. These two guys are an element of that but like Cobie’s stated, she’s not ready. She has to fix herself first.”

Stumptown Star Cobie Smulders
‘Stumptown’ stars Camryn Manheim, Michael Ealy, Cobie Smulders, Tantoo Cardinal, Cole Sibus, Adrian Martinez, and Jake Johnson (ABC/Image Group LA)

What’s your favorite part of her personality?

Cobie Smulders: “I really enjoy playing…there’s something really interesting, and we did it a few times in the pilot, where she’s on the edge and she doesn’t know when she’s dealing with her PTSD, she’s very unhinged. I love playing somebody who’s in that place and playing out how they come back and ground themselves again, and who they need to do that. That was really fun to play.

(Laughing) I also really like pretending to be drunk. I really enjoy it. I’m not a big drinker anymore. In my youth – I’m definitely pulling from experiences. But there’s just something that’s just such a fun thing to play somebody who’s like always going out, who’s kind of roaming from one thing to the next. Who’s just kind of…she’s untethered. But one thing that she’s holding onto is this relationship that she has with her brother. If that wasn’t in her life, who knows where this woman would be. Who knows where she would be? She’d be roaming around somewhere but because she has this boy in her life to take care of and have him take care of her, it grounds her back. It brings her back from the edge.”

How much of the backstory do we actually get to see?

Cobie Smulders: “We’ll certainly over the first season get to know more about all the characters. In the pilot we learn this character is somebody who’s suffering from PTSD and that that derives from experiences in the military. We get to see that in flashbacks. That’s really all. We don’t see any of the background of the other characters so much.”

David Bernad: “Not yet. That’s really what this show over the first season will unspool, some of these backstories. Why are Dex and Ansel living in this house? Where are the parents? We’ll get a little deeper into the loss that she suffers. We’ll see it in the pilot in terms of her ex-boyfriend.

Each of the other characters’ backstories…every character in the show has a secret. And as we go on, everyone’s lying to somebody – whether it’s themselves or another character. That’s really what the first season unspools, those relationships.”

On a series that has a lot of deep stuff being dealt with, how good is it to find a fun aspect to the character to lighten things up a little?

Cobie Smulders: “Well, it’s wonderful because like in life it can be falling apart around you, but you don’t act like it, you know? I think it’s very true to life. You might be a mess but you’re not going to tell anyone that you are. You’re not going to admit to that. So, I think that plays into it.

That is the joy of pretending to shoot this based in Portland that we get to bring in all these characters that are unlike characters you’d normally see on TV. Bad guys aren’t going to look like your average bad guy. If you saw them walking down the street, that’s not how you would peg them. So, there’s definitely comedic moments with guest stars but also within it we’re all just trying to survive. You’ve got to laugh.”

‘Supernatural’ Season 15 Interview: Jensen Ackles on the Final Season and the Show’s Legacy

The CW’s Supernatural cast had just participated in an emotional final panel at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con when they arrived in the press room for roundtable interviews. 15 years is an incredible run, and series stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Alexander Calvert were obviously touched by the send-off they received from fans fortunate enough to have snagged a ticket to the sold-out Con.

During our roundtable interview, Jensen Ackles reflected on the show’s impact and legacy. He also talked about speaking to the writers about the series finale.

What are you most excited to tackle with Dean in this final season?

Jensen Ackles: (Laughing) “Cas. Just like a full football tackle. That’s it. No, I think the big kind of looming mountain to climb is going to be that final episode. We have an idea of what we’re going to do, and already knowing that is going to take some mental preparation.”

So, you know the ending?

Jensen Ackles: “We have an ending right now. Obviously, we’re nine months away from that; things could change. But we have – yes – we’ve all kind of signed off on an ending.

Jared and I flew out to LA about a month ago…a month and a half ago…and sat down in the writers room – which we’ve never done in 15 years – and said, ‘Okay, how are we going to do this?’ And they knew we were coming. They were prepared and they had all the writers in there. They gave a full pitch to Jared and I.

It was heavy. It was emotional. Jared seems to think you can’t please everybody and not everybody is going to like it. I don’t know. I think you’d be hard-pressed to see if somebody is just like, ‘No, that sucked!’

You guys truly had a hand in the ending?

Jensen Ackles: “Yeah. That was what we wanted to do. We didn’t want to just be like, ‘I don’t care.’ It’s been 15 years, you know?

It’s so important to us. We really, truly care about these characters and about this story. They’ve been a part of our lives for 15 years now. I’m very protective of Dean and I will always be. Like Jared said at the panel, these characters are a part of us and will always be a part of us. So, I’m looking forward to tackling that.”

What do you hope the show’s legacy will be?

Jensen Ackles: “There’s many things I’m very proud about. I’m proud of the fans that we found or that found us and how good they are to each other and how good they are to us. I’m proud of the crew that we’ve sustained. A lot of times in television, crews come and go. You know, they’ll have grips that will come in and then they’ll go on to another show. A new crew will come in. Camera operators might get their bump up to director of photography and they’ll go off and do another show. We’ve had an incredible retention of crew members on our show for going on 15 years now. So, they’re all like family.

I’d say one of the things that I’m going to be most proud of is our set. […] Our set has a reputation. Every set has a reputation and that reputation comes from the tone that is set by the producers, the actors, the director. I get so much satisfaction from a guest star or an actor or director coming on our set and saying, ‘Guys, you have the best reputation.’ Or, ‘I had so much fun with this show I had to come back and direct another one.’ Or after a guest star comes, they’re like, ‘You know, I’ve guest starred on countless TV shows. This is the most fun set I’ve ever been on.’ Those are the comments that I really, really love.”

Is there anything from the set you want to steal? Are there dibs on set pieces already?

Jensen Ackles: (Laughing) “No, not yet. I don’t think we’re allowed to. It’s all Warner Bros property.”
