The first trailer’s arrived for The Lady and The Dale documentary series which dives into the story of Elizabeth Carmichael and her three-wheeled car, The Dale. HBO Documentary Films’ four-part docuseries will kick off with episodes one and two airing back-to-back beginning at Sunday, January 31, 20201 at 9pm ET/PT.
Room 104‘s Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass executive produced the series with Nick Cammilleri and Zackary Drucker directing. Cammilleri, Drucker, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, Mel Eslyn, Allen Bain, Andre Gaines, and Alana Carithers also executive produce.
HBO released the following description of the documentary series:
In 1974 in the midst of the Middle East oil crisis, a new, innovative automobile promised America high mileage and a low-price tag; its three-wheeled, slick design is a hopeful harbinger of things to come. Behind the development and promotion of The Dale, was Elizabeth Carmichael, who had previously lived a life of crime, on the run from authorities, and always cooked up preposterous mayhem. She claimed to have smuggled arms to Cuba during the revolution and was wanted by the FBI. With several ex-wives and children in her wake, she eventually wedded soulmate Vivian Barrett. They and their five children lived on the run from the law for many years with Liz starting her transition in 1966.
As a woman in the 1970s, with her past kept hidden and a new identity as a widow with a business degree, Liz Carmichael founded the 20th Century Motor Car Company and made a name for herself in the male-dominated business world. A savvy marketer, Carmichael claimed that The Dale would be the biggest thing since the Model T and would challenge Detroit’s iron grip on the auto industry.
Interest in the Dale intensified, accelerated by Carmichael’s boasts of its efficiency and safety but also fueled by the company’s dubious business practices. With that spotlight came increased focus on Liz’s identity and gender. As media attention was heating up and frustrated investors clamoring at her door, Carmichael was arrested for fraud and business code violations before The Dale could even hit the streets.
The trial that followed was one of the longest in Los Angeles criminal court’s history and became as much about Carmichael’s transgender identity as it was about The Dale. Representing herself in the high-profile case, Carmichael challenged the prejudices of the time, but the surrounding media circus obfuscated the issues; Liz as a person was under interrogation as much as her business practices. The scrutiny into her life would continue for decades, even as she continually found surprising ways to outwit her pursuers, persist in her own survival and keep her family together.
The Lady and The Dale uses an arresting and inventive technique of marrying archival material with photo collages and animation to illustrate Carmichael’s experiences, combining audio recordings with interviews while framing Carmichael’s story within a broader history of trans experiences. Shedding light on Liz Carmichael’s life and on the dogged investigations into her past and gender identity are Candi Michael, Liz’s daughter; Michael Michael, Liz’s son; Jeri Burchard, Liz’s granddaughter; Dick Carlson, local TV reporter; Pete Noyes, KABC news producer; Charles Richard Barrett, Liz’s brother-in-law; and lawyers, prosecutors and employees of 20th Century Motor Car Company. Historian Susan Stryker, Gender and Media Theorist Sandy Stone and criminal defender Mia Yamamoto add historical and legal context to the story.
Fox’s Prodigal Son season two has added Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago) as a series regular. The new season, which kicks off on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, will feature Zeta-Jones playing Dr. Vivian Capshaw. Dr. Capshaw is described as Claremont Psychiatric’s resident MD and will be introduced in the second half of season two.
Per Fox: “In Season Two, Dr. Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen) is assigned to infirmary duty, and Dr. Capshaw (Zeta-Jones) revels in tasking “The Surgeon” to clean bedpans and mop the floor. But as Martin proves valuable in treating patients, Capshaw begins to see him in a new light…which is not a good thing.”
“An extraordinary talent, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the perfect foil for the brilliant Michael Sheen,” stated Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, FOX Entertainment. “I can’t wait to see these two greats go head-to-head in a season that is bound to raise the bar set by an outstanding Season One.”
The season two cast includes Tom Payne as Malcolm Bright, Lou Diamond Phillips as Gil Arroyo, Halston Sage as Ainsley, and Bellamy Young as Jessica Whitly. Keiko Agena plays Dr. Edrisa Tanaka, Frank Harts is JT Tarmel, and Aurora Perrineau is Dani Powell.
The series comes from Sam Sklaver and Chris Fedak, with the co-creators writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunners. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter also executive produce the Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment production.
The Plot, Courtesy of Fox:
Prodigal Son follows Malcolm Bright, a criminal profiler with a rare talent for getting inside the minds of killers. He learned how they think because his father, Martin Whitly, was a notorious serial killer known as “The Surgeon.” Now he’s using his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve their most puzzling murders.
Bright’s team, led by his longtime mentor, NYPD Lieutenant Gil Arroyo, includes Detectives Dani Powell, JT Tarmel, and medical examiner Dr. Edrisa Tanaka. Season Two picks up with Bright’s personal life in disarray after the shocking actions of his sister, Ainsley, in the Season One finale. Now, he must “take care” of her and protect his mother, Jessica Whitly, from a secret that could tear the family apart all over again!
Further complicating matters, Martin seeks to deepen his relationship with Bright, his prodigal son, but forging this bond leads to shocking twists and revelations.

Hulu announced the second season of the adult animated comedy series Solar Opposites with a short video that’s definitely not safe for work. (I’m not kidding – don’t crank up your speakers at work.) Season two of the twisted aliens on Earth comedy from co-creators Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan will debut on March 26, 2021.
According to Hulu, all eight season two episodes will drop on March 26th.
Returning voice cast members include Justin Roiland as Korvo and Sean Giambrone as Yumyulack. Thomas Middleditch lends his voice to Terry and Mary Mack provides the voice of Jesse. Roiland, McMahan, and Josh Bycel serve as executive producers of the 20th Television production.
Terry, Korvo, Yumyulack and Jesse work together to steal a bear from the zoo with hilarious consequences in ‘Solar Opposites’ season 1 (Photo courtesy of FOX)
The Plot, Courtesy of Hulu:
Solar Opposites centers around a team of four aliens who escape their exploding home world only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo and Yumyulack only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry and Jesse love humans and all their TV, junk food and fun stuff. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.
On season two of Solar Opposites, the Solar Opposites take it bigger, funnier, and more opposite than ever before.
The Covid-19 pandemic cut short season two of The CW’s Legacies and left multiple plotlines dangling, including Hope and Landon’s fates. Season three episode one might not provide all the answers we desire, but it does give the kids of the Salvatore Boarding School a chance to show off their athletic skills.
Season three episode one was directed by Jeffrey Hunt from a script by Penny Cox and Cynthia Adarkwa. “We’re Not Worthy” will air on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 9pm ET/PT, immediately following the series premiere of Walker starring Supernatural‘s Jared Padalecki.
The cast includes Danielle Rose Russell plays Hope Mikaelson, Jenny Boyd is Lizzie Saltzman, Kaylee Bryant is Josie Saltzman, Quincy Fouse plays Milton “MG” Greasley, and Aria Shahghasemi stars as Landon Kirby. Peyton Alex Smith is Rafael, Chris Lee is Kaleb, Leo Howard is Ethan Mac, Ben Levin is Jed, and Matthew Davis plays Alaric Saltzman.
“We’re Not Worthy” Plot: LET THE GAMES BEGIN — In order to get a handle on some urgencies at the school, Alaric (Davis) sends the students off-campus for their first-ever field day. But when a medieval monster arrives with a challenge, the students are left scrambling to guess which one of them may be a worthy opponent.
Set in The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted, and within The Vampire Diaries universe, Legacies tells the ongoing story of a new generation of supernatural students as they learn what it means to be special in a society that wouldn’t understand their gifts.
In season two, Hope Mikaelson returned to a world that had forgotten she ever existed and reunited with her former Headmaster, Alaric Saltzman. Working together, Hope and Dr. Saltzman ultimately rejoined The Salvatore School to lead their Super Squad of powerful vampires, witches and werewolves, including Lizzie & Josie Saltzman, MG, Rafael, and Kaleb and even a Phoenix, her true love Landon, into battle against a dizzying horde of fantastic and deadly monsters birthed from the Malivore Pit … and their old nemesis, The Necromancer, who was determined to resurrect Malivore.
As season three begins, Hope has risked everything to pull her friends back from the brink of a monstrous prophecy that threatened to doom them all. But when a heartbreaking loss shatters her whole world, Hope Mikaelson will be forced to fight fate itself.
The 9-1-1 spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star returns to Fox’s primetime schedule on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 9pm ET/PT. Season two episode one, “Back in the Saddle,” will introduce new series regular Gina Torres (Suits) as Tommy Vega.
Torres is a new addition to the cast which returns for a second season without one of season one’s big name stars. Liv Tyler opted not to return for season two due to travel concerns around the Covid-19 pandemic. Tyler lives in London with her family and didn’t want to risk the international flights to Los Angeles while the pandemic is raging.
“What a thrill it was having a movie star of Liv Tyler’s stature to help us launch the first season of 9-1-1: Lone Star,” stated co-creator/showrunner Tim Minear. “We loved working with Liv and will be forever indebted to her for her haunting, powerful portrayal of Michelle Blake. While we were able to tell a complete chapter in Michelle’s story, as with Connie Britton on our mothership, we also feel like there are more stories to be told. The door here will always be open for a return.”
Season two’s cast is led by Emmy Award nominee Rob Lowe (The West Wing) as Owen Strand. Ronen Rubinstein plays T.K. Strand, Sierra Aylina McClain is Grace Ryder, and Jim Parrack stars as Judd Ryder. Natacha Karam returns as Marjan Marwani, Brian Michael Smith is Paul Strickland, Rafael L. Silva plays Carlos Reyes, and Julian Works is Mateo Chavez.
“Back in the Saddle” Plot: The 126 crew responds to a military tank on the loose in downtown Austin and a human pile-up at the roller derby. Meanwhile, new paramedic captain, Tommy Vega, joins the team and Owen is reunited with his ex-wife and T.K.’s mother, Gwyneth (guest star Lisa Edelstein), and receives an update on his cancer.
The 92 voting members of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists – myself included – cast our votes in one of the most confusing, confounding awards seasons to date. Once totaled, Nomadland emerged the year’s big winner, picking up six wins out of its nine nominations. The engaging drama was named the year’s best film and Chloe Zhao snagged wins in the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay categories.
“All in all, 2020 saw a bumper crop of female-directed and female-centered films that reached widespread audiences via online releases,” stated Jennifer Merin, EDA AWARDS and AWJF founder and film critic. “From AWFJ’s point of view, that’s one ray of sunlight that has shown through this year’s pandemic darkness. We hope that trend will continue as our nation heals from its various ailments.”
The Alliance of Women Film Journalists’ 14th annual EDA Awards are divided into three sections – Best Of, Female Focus, and Special Mention – and offer 25 different categories.
