Set in the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic and multicultural cities, Gangs of London tells the story of a city being torn apart by the turbulent power struggles of the international gangs that control it and the sudden power vacuum that’s created when the head of London’s most powerful crime family is assassinated.

Perhaps the one man who might be able to help him and be his ally is Elliot Finch (Dìrísù), who up until now, has been one of life’s losers, a lowlife chancer with a mysterious interest in the Wallace family. Erin Brockovich-Inspired Drama with Katey Sagal Gets a Series Order at ABC

Katey Sagal

Katey Sagal (The Conners, Sons of Anarchy) is set to star in the ABC drama Rebel, inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich. ABC’s given the drama a straight to series order and is anticipating a 2021 premiere.

In addition to Sagal as Annie “Rebel” Bello, the season one cast includes John Corbett as Grady Bello, James Lesure as Benji, Lex Scott Davis as Cassidy, and Tamala Jones as Lona. Ariela Barer plays Ziggie, Kevin Zegers is Nate, Sam Palladio is Luke, and Andy Garcia plays Cruz.

Rebel comes from executive producer Krista Vernoff (Grey’s Anatomy). Vernoff wrote the first episode and Tara Nicole Weyr directs. Brockovich will be involved as an executive producer along with Alexandre Schmitt, John Davis, John Fox, and Andrew Stearn.

“Erin Brockovich has never stopped the extraordinary work she does fighting for her clients like they’re family, and Krista Vernoff’s take on her life today in Rebel is undeniable,” said Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment. “Katey Sagal is a powerhouse as ‘Rebel’ and with Andy Garcia, John Corbett and the rest of the phenomenal cast, viewers are going to fall in love with these characters and the world Krista has created for them.”

“The work that Erin Brockovich does in this world is so powerful and so important that it almost defies description. Erin works tirelessly for social, legal and environmental justice despite the lack of a formal degree. She inspires everyone she meets to become their own heroes, and somehow, she also keeps us laughing. It has been a tremendous honor to get to know Erin and to create a show inspired by her,” said Vernoff. “I am thrilled to be working with a dream cast led by the extraordinary Katey Sagal with the incredible Tara Nicole Weyr directing. I could not be more excited about the series order for Rebel, and I’m so grateful for the support of Dana Walden, Karey Burke, Craig Hunegs, Jonnie Davis and all my partners at Walt Disney Television and ABC.”

Brockovich added, “Rebel is not just my story, it is all of our stories. There is a hero that exists in all of us, and I am so excited for Krista Vernoff and ABC to bring their visionary storytelling to this series. The name ‘Rebel’ oozes self-empowerment, courage and rising above, even in the worst of circumstances. I cannot think of anyone better to play this role than the indomitable Katey Sagal, who is such a force, as well as the rest of this extraordinary cast.”

The Plot, Courtesy of ABC:

Inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich today, Annie “Rebel” Bello is a blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree. She’s a funny, messy, brilliant and fearless woman who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves. When Rebel applies herself to a fight she believes in, she will win at almost any cost.

‘Blackbird’ Review: First-Rate Cast Can’t Overcome a Dull and Lifeless Drama

Blackbird is not the heartwarming tale of a family pushing aside petty grievances to gather together and share the final, quiet moments of a loved one’s life. It’s also not the compelling story of the dignity of choosing when to say goodbye on one’s own terms. It attempts to be both but ultimately fails because the characters at the heart of the film simply aren’t worth an emotional investment.

Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking) stars as Lily, a wife, mother, and grandmother who’s entering the last stage of a debilitating disease. Rather than lose her ability to function, she’s come to the decision that quality is better than quantity and that assisted suicide is preferable to becoming incapacitated by this disease.

Lily decided to end her life with the support of her husband, Paul (Sam Neill), who wholeheartedly agrees with her desire to pass away peacefully at home while she’s still capable of making decisions for herself.

Lily’s final weekend arrives and her two daughters return home to say their last goodbyes. Jennifer (Kate Winslet), the “responsible” one, is accompanied by her husband, Michael (Rainn Wilson), and their teenage son, Jonathan (Anson Boon). Anna (Mia Wasikowska) shows up late, which is apparently completely in keeping with her reputation of being the irresponsible daughter, and she’s brought her on-again/off-again girlfriend, Chris (Bex Taylor-Klaus), to keep her company. Also in attendance is family friend Liz (Lindsay Duncan) who’s been a permanent fixture in the lives of everyone in the household since the early days of Lily and Paul’s marriage.

All are aware of Lily’s decision and each member of the family deals with it in his or her own way. Unfortunately, some of those invited to share in Lily’s final hours aren’t completely on board with her choice. Events occur during the course of the weekend that cause others to shift their support away from Lily’s plan.

While all of this is taking place, well-kept secrets are revealed and grievances are aired. There’s a sort of Festivus scene at the dinner table that rings truer than most of what goes down over the course of the rest of the film. However, by the time that point’s reached it’s far too late to feel invested in the outcome of this family’s traumatic weekend gathering.

Blackbird Review

Rather than delivering an emotional gut-punch, Blackbird fails to land much of a response at all. The dysfunctional relationship between the sisters feels hollow, as do Anna and Jennifer’s relationships with their partners. Only Liz actually breathes any life into this gathering of stereotypical characters. Unfortunately, Liz is also used as a foil to force opposing forces to come together in a contrived plot twist that feels dishonest. That particular turn of events is so convenient it’s laughable.

Strangely, it’s the supporting players in Blackbird – Bex Taylor-Klaus’ Chris and Lindsay Duncan’s Liz – who outshine their more well-known co-stars. Taylor-Klaus and Duncan are breaths of fresh air in an otherwise disappointingly dull ensemble.

Director Roger Michell’s Blackbird starts off well enough and it certainly has a cast any director would be envious of signing up. But shortly into its relatively swift running time the flatness of the story and the lack of interesting characters cause a detachment to what should have been an emotionally compelling story. By the time the “will she or won’t she go through with it” moment arrives, it’s difficult to genuinely care one way or another.

The Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:

It’s been two years since siblings Kate (Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Lewis) saved Christmas, and a lot has changed. Kate, now a cynical teenager, is reluctantly spending Christmas in Cancun with her mom’s new boyfriend and his son Jack (Bruno). Unwilling to accept this new version of her family, Kate decides to run away. But when a mysterious, magical troublemaker named Belsnickel threatens to destroy the North Pole and end Christmas for good, Kate and Jack are unexpectedly pulled into a new adventure with Santa Claus (Russell).

A Look Back at The Christmas Chronicles:

The Christmas Chronicles tells the story of sister and brother, Kate and Teddy Pierce, whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa – as you’ve never seen him before – and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it’s too late.
