Golden Globes 2021 Winners: Nomadland, Borat Sequel Emerge Victorious

Golden Globes 2021
Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards on February 28, 2021 (Photo by: NBC)

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the 2021 Golden Globes from separate coasts, poking fun at the nominees and making a point of chiding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for not having a single Black journalist among its 87 members.

While accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Jane Fonda also addressed the HFPA’s lack of diversity. “Stories, they really can change people. But there’s a story we’ve been afraid to see and hear about ourselves in this industry, a story about which voices we respect and elevate and which we tune out, a story about who is offered a seat at the table and who is kept out of the rooms where decisions are made. So let’s all of us, including all the groups that decide who gets hired and what gets made and who wins awards, let’s all of us make an effort to expand that tent so that everyone rises and everyone’s story has a chance to be seen and heard,” said Fonda.

Hosting from opposite coasts wasn’t the only change in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nominees and winners were brought in via Zoom which led to awkward moments and some really horrible choices in reaction shots. And rather than stars, the in-person audience was made up of first responders and essential workers who adhered to Covid protocols.

Among the night’s big winners was Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) who is now only the second woman to win in the Best Director category. The first female winner, Barbra Streisand (Yentl), took to Twitter to congratulate Zhao, tweeting, “It’s about time! Congratulations Chloé! Well deserved!” Chadwick Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, delivered an emotional speech while accepting her husband’s posthumous award for this outstanding work in what turned out to be his final film – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. And Sacha Baron Cohen had a huge night, snagging wins in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy categories for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Riverdale Season 5 Episode 7 Photos: Preview of “Fire in the Sky”

When The CW’s Riverdale returns from a two week break it will be with an episode that explores strange sightings and finds Archie working on building up a fire department. Season five episode seven, “Fire in the Sky,” was directed by Gabriel Correa and will air on March 10, 2021 at 8pm ET/PT.

The cast of season five includes KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones. Madelaine Petsch is Cheryl Blossom, Marisol Nichols is Hermione Lodge, Mӓdchen Amick is Alice Cooper, Casey Cott is Kevin Keller, Mark Consuelos is Hiram Lodge, Skeet Ulrich is FP Jones, Charles Melton is Reggie Mantle, Drew Ray Tanner is Fangs Fogarty, and Vanessa Morgan plays Toni Topaz.

“Chapter Eighty-Three: Fire in the Sky” Plot: A FEW GOOD MEN — Following in his Grandpa Artie’s footsteps, Archie (Apa) begins to recruit Riverdale’s new volunteer fire department. Toni’s (Morgan) attempt to lure Cheryl (Petsch) out of Thornhill and back into daily life in Riverdale leads to more tension between the two.

Elsewhere, Betty (Reinhart), Alice (Amick) and Kevin’s (Cott) latest investigation leads them into conflict with Hiram (Consuelos). Finally, as Veronica (Mendes) comes up with a risky plan to support Riverdale’s local businesses, Jughead (Sprouse) and Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) begin to unravel an old mystery surrounding some strange sightings in the town.

Season 5 Description, Courtesy of The CW:

The fourth season of Riverdale began with a funeral and tribute to Archie’s late father, the beloved Fred Andrews (Luke Perry). Throughout the season, Archie (KJ Apa) tried to live up to his father’s memory by mentoring youths at his Community Center with the help of his pals Reggie and Munroe Moore. But the shadow of that tragedy loomed over Archie—and only darkened when Fred’s brother Frank arrived, bringing unforeseen complications with him, much to the chagrin of Archie’s mother (Molly Ringwald).

Meanwhile, after Betty saved her mom and sister from the Farm cult, she joined her brother Charles’s Junior F.B.I. Training Program. Veronica found herself locked in a season-long battle with her father Hiram and half-sister Hermosa over her burgeoning maple rum business. And, at the urging on FP, Jughead enrolled in a new school, Stonewall Prep, only to be caught up in a mystery that involved his grandfather, the secret author of a series of teen detective novels called “The Baxter Brothers.” His classmates turned out to be killers—and it was up to Betty and Jughead (pretending to be dead) to solve the murder of…Jughead Jones!

At Thistlehouse, Cheryl was trapped in a gothic nightmare, fighting her demons, literal and metaphoric, with the loving support of her girlfriend Toni. She finally put her brother Jason to rest while maintaining her control over the Vixens as resident HBIC against Principal Honey (Kerr Smith). Kevin got dragged into an illicit tickle scheme, but still found time to put on a Variety Show with hit songs from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

And throughout the season, disturbing unmarked videotapes kept appearing on our characters’ doorsteps, ensuring that there would be one more mystery to solve.

Season five of Riverdale will begin with our characters’ final days as students at Riverdale High. From an epic Senior Prom to a bittersweet Graduation, there are a lot of emotional moments and goodbyes yet to come — with some couples breaking up, as everyone goes their separate ways to college — or elsewhere. Then, we will redock with our gang as young adults, all returning to Riverdale to escape their troubled pasts. And life — and romance — will only be more complicated now that they’re in their twenties…

Nailed It!: Double Trouble Trailer – Twice the Competitors, Twice the Screw Ups

Season five of Netflix’s hilarious baking competition series, Nailed It!, is pulling a switcheroo. Rather than individuals competing to see who can best replicate a featured bakery item, season five will find twosomes competing for the $10,000 prize.

The six-episode new season will premiere on March 26, 2021. Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres return to sacrifice their stomachs as hosts and judges.

The Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:

The Emmy-nominated series returns with twice the fun! This time, home bakers pair up in teams of two to take a shot at recreating edible masterpieces for a $10,000 prize. From best buds to brothers and sisters, these bakers are twice as bad. This season, we go far and wide for inspiration, ranging from delicious baked treats inspired by Greek mythology to sugary desserts from dear old Grandma.

A serial killer returns and Erin’s overwhelmed at work on CBS’s Blue Bloods season 11 episode eight, “More Than Meets the Eye.” Directed by David Barrett from a script by Siobhan Byrne O’Connor and Yasmin Cadet, episode eight is scheduled to air on Friday, March 5, 2021 at 10pm ET/PT.

Tom Selleck leads the cast as Frank Reagan, Donnie Wahlberg is Danny Reagan, and Bridget Moynahan plays Erin Reagan. The cast also includes Will Estes as Jamie Reagan, Len Cariou as Henry Reagan, Sami Gayle as Nicky Reagan-Boyle, Marisa Ramirez as Det. Maria Baez, and Vanessa Ray plays Officer Eddie Janko.

Episode eight guest stars include Annabella Sciorra, Kathryn Gallagher, Bobbi A. Bordley, Joshua Wills, and Simoné Elizabeth Bart.

“More Than Meets the Eye” Plot: Erin tries not to feel overpowered as her new boss shadows her at work just as she’s trying to get a nervous eye-witness to reveal the identity of who shot her boyfriend. Also, the serial killer who previously held Danny and Baez hostage resurfaces, and when Jaime arrests an intrusive reporter who appears at a series of store lootings, it leads to a standoff between Frank and the Attorney General over the press’ First Amendment rights.

Series Description, Courtesy of CBS:

Blue Bloods is a drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner, and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as Chief.

A source of pride and concern for Frank is his eldest son, Danny, a seasoned detective, family man and Iraq War vet who on occasion uses dubious tactics to solve cases with his partner, Detective Maria Baez. The Reagan women in the family include middle daughter, Erin, a New York Assistant D.A. who serves as the legal compass for her siblings and father, and is a single parent to her daughter Nicky, who is pursuing a career in San Francisco. Jamie is the youngest Reagan, a Harvard Law graduate and the family’s “golden boy.”

Unable to deny the family tradition, Jamie decided to give up a lucrative future in law and follow in the family footsteps as a cop. He’s found a friend and ally in his wife, Eddie, who keeps him on his toes, and has very different reasons than the Reagans for joining the police force. The Reagans welcomed a new family addition after Frank learned his deceased son, officer Joe Reagan, has an adult child they never knew about, a young man who is a rising NYPD cop.
