‘The Third Day’ Limited Series: Episode Details, Cast, and Air Dates

HBO’s limited series The Third Day will premiere on September 14, 2020, with new episodes of the six-part series dropping on Mondays at 9pm ET/PT. Created by Dennis Kelly and Felix Barrett, The Third Day stars Jude Law (The New Pope) and Naomie Harris (Moonlight) and is told in two parts: “Summer” and “Winter.”

The cast of the psychological thriller also includes Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts), Emily Watson (Chernobyl), and Paddy Considine (The Outsider). The series is a Sky and HBO co-production with Sky Studios, Plan B Entertainment, and Punchdrunk producing. Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Felix Barrett, and Dennis Kelly served as executive producers.

Dennis Kelly wrote the “Summer” portion and Marc Munden directed. “Winter” is written by Kit De Waal, Dean O’Loughlin, and Dennis Kelly with Philippa Lowthorpe directing.

The Third Day Details and Episode Descriptions, Courtesy of HBO:

Told over the first three episodes, “Summer” stars Jude Law as Sam, a man who is drawn to a mysterious island off the British coast where he encounters a group of islanders set on preserving their traditions at any cost. Isolated from the mainland, Sam is unable to leave the idyllic and dangerously enchanting world he has discovered, where the secretive rituals of its inhabitants bring him to grapple with experiences of loss and trauma hidden in his past through the distorted lens of the present. As boundaries between fantasy and reality fragment, his quest to unlock the truth leads the islanders to reveal a shocking secret.

“Summer” characters include:

SAM (JUDE LAW) Sam, a kind family man from London, is brought to the island after helping one of its young residents. He finds himself drawn to the Island, however it begins to take a psychological tole on Sam, as he begins to relive trauma from his past.

JESS (KATHERINE WATERSTON) Jess is an American historian, and frequent visitor to the island. She is fascinated by the island’s history and culture and is keen to share what she knows. She has a forthright, but comfortable nature about her, and becomes a confidant to Sam.

MRS. MARTIN (EMILY WATSON) Mrs. Martin runs the local pub, The Oyster, with her husband. Brash and foul-mouthed, her bark is worse than her bite. She and her husband are respected pillars of the community, who proudly uphold the island’s traditions.

MR. MARTIN (PADDY CONSIDINE) Mr. Martin runs the local pub, The Oyster, with his wife. He is a fastidious, cheerful man who always looks at the bright side of things. He is quick to help Sam and welcomes him to the island with open arms.

LARRY (JOHN DAGLEISH) Larry is a violent local, keen on causing trouble. He is a close friend of Jason’s who wants Sam off the island, and he will stop at nothing to see him gone.

JASON (MARK LEWIS JONES) Jason is a local, and father to Epona, the young girl Sam helps. He is a troubled man who is suspicious of Sam and is unhappy with him staying on the island.

After “Summer,” comes “Fall,” a theatrical event broadcast online where viewers who seek more will be immersed in the world of The Third Day. Featuring members of The Third Day cast including Jude Law and Katherine Waterston, viewers will follow the events of a single day in real time. Florence Welch will also feature in an acting role. Capturing events as live and in one continuous take, this cinematic broadcast will invite viewers deeper into the mysterious and suspenseful world of The Third Day, and blur and distort the lines between what’s real and what’s not. It is created by theatrical innovators Punchdrunk and co-directed by founder and artistic director of Punchdrunk Felix Barrett and “Summer” director Marc Munden.

“Winter” unfolds over the latter three episodes and stars Naomie Harris as Helen, a strong-willed outsider who comes to the island seeking answers, but whose arrival precipitates a fractious battle to decide its fate as the lines between fantasy and fact are distorted.

“Winter” characters include:

HELEN (NAOMIE HARRIS) Helen, strong-willed and pragmatic, comes to the island with her daughters, Ellie and Talulah. She soon finds herself caught between the opposing factions on the island and must quickly determine who can be trusted.

ELLIE (NICO PARKER) Ellie comes to the island with her mother and sister to celebrate her birthday. Quiet and considerate, Ellie has been having trouble at school and finds solace in religion. She takes a liking to the island and befriends a local girl, who introduces her to the Island’s culture and traditions.

TALLULAH (CHARLOTTE GAIRDNER-MIHELL) Tallulah, bright and opinionated, is Helen’s youngest daughter. She is less taken by the island than her sister and is keen to get back to the creature comforts that await on the mainland.

COWBOY (PAUL KAYE) Though not being an island native, the Cowboy is a true believer of the island’s customs and traditions. Ready to assist a fellow outsider, he helps Helen navigate the fractious battleground the island has become.

‘Filthy Rich’ Series Preview: Episode 1 Photos, Cast Info, and Plot Details

Sex and the City‘s Kim Cattrall returns to television in a starring role as the lead in Fox’s Filthy Rich. The new Southern Gothic family drama comes from The Help‘s writer/director Tate Taylor and makes its debut on September 21, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT. In support of its premiere, Fox has released photos from episode one along with the season one plot description.

In addition to Kim Cattrall as Margaret, the cast of season one includes Gerald McRaney as Eugene, Corey Cott as Eric, Olivia Macklin as Becky, and Aubrey Dollar as Rose. Melia Kreiling plays Ginger, Benjamin Levy Aguilar is Antonio, Mark L. Young is Jason, Steve Harris is Franklin Lee, and Aaron Lazar plays Reverend Paul Thomas.

Series creator Tate Taylor wrote and directed episode one and serves as an executive producer. Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo, John Norris, and Abe Sylvia also executive produce, with Sylvia handling showrunner duties.

Filthy Rich Plot, Courtesy of Fox:

Meet the Monreauxes, a mega-rich Southern family famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. On the cusp of launching a digital retail arm of the company, the family’s patriarch, EUGENE, dies in a plane crash (or so we think), leaving MARGARET, a now-“Oprah” to the religious and Southern communities, to take charge of the family business. Not surprisingly, Eugene’s apparent death greatly impacts the Monreaux children: ERIC, the couple’s ambitious son, married to the prim and snooty BECKY, who assumes he will now run the show; and daughter ROSE, a budding fashion designer, who constantly struggles to evade the vast shadow cast by her mother.

If that wasn’t enough, the Monreauxes are stunned to learn that Eugene fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will. Now, Margaret must use her business savvy and Southern charm to control her newly legitimized heirs, whose very existence threatens the Monreaux family name and fortune: GINGER, the tough-as-nails daughter of a Vegas cocktail waitress, whose life was virtually destroyed by Eugene’s rejection; ANTONIO, a single dad and boxer from Queens, NY; and JASON, another scion, who is not what he seems to be.

Margaret’s rock is her lifelong confidant and friend, FRANKLIN LEE, the Monreaux family lawyer, who has her back in the wake of the death of her husband and threats to the Monreaux empire, one of them being the beloved, popular, influential, and ambitious minister at the Sunshine Network, REVEREND PAUL THOMAS, who doesn’t think Margaret is capable of running the network, a newly announced retail venture, and her TV show simultaneously.

With monumental twists and turns, not to mention lies, deceit and shade from every direction, FILTHY RICH presents a world in which everyone has an ulterior motive – and no one is going down without a fight.

Chadwick Boseman, the tremendously talented star of Black Panther, 42, 21 Bridges, and Marshall, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2020 after a private four year battle with colon cancer. The world was informed of his tragic passing by way of a tweet from his official account, a tweet that has now become the most liked ever according to Twitter.

Boseman fully embraced the role of King T’Challa and understood the significance of Black Panther, it’s representation and impact. Bringing Wakanda to life and playing its fierce, intelligent King T’Challa was about so much more than living the part of a comic book-inspired superhero. Boseman embraced the challenges and responsibilities of the role, and his legacy will live on for decades as new generations aspire to be like Boseman’s King.

To know now, only after his passing, the physical toll all of his films since his diagnosis in 2016 took on his body… It’s impossible to comprehend exactly what he went through while still delivering incredible performances, interacting with fans, visiting sick children in hospitals, and lending his voice to social issues he believed in.

Marvel Studios, ABC Entertainment and ABC News announced they will present a special commercial-free broadcast of the Oscar-winning Black Panther on ABC on Sunday, August 30th at 8pm. Immediately following the screening, ABC will air Chadwick Boseman – A Tribute for a King. Per ABC, the special will “celebrate Boseman’s storied life, legacy and career, and the cultural imprint he made on- and off-screen. It will feature tributes that have poured in from celebrities, political figures and fans across the world, special words from those who starred alongside him and knew Boseman best, and shine a light on the medical condition he privately battled.”

Boseman’s Black Panther director Ryan Coogler released an incredibly moving statement on the loss of his friend.

Ryan Coogler’s Full Statement:

“Before sharing my thoughts on the passing of the great Chadwick Boseman, I first offer my condolences to his family who meant so very much to him. To his wife, Simone, especially.

I inherited Marvel and the Russo Brothers’ casting choice of T’Challa. It is something that I will forever be grateful for. The first time I saw Chad’s performance as T’Challa, it was in an unfinished cut of Captain America: Civil War. I was deciding whether or not directing Black Panther was the right choice for me. I’ll never forget, sitting in an editorial suite on the Disney Lot and watching his scenes. His first with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, then, with the South African cinema titan, John Kani as T’Challa’s father, King T’Chaka. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to make this movie. After Scarlett’s character leaves them, Chad and John began conversing in a language I had never heard before. It sounded familiar, full of the same clicks and smacks that young black children would make in the States. The same clicks that we would often be chided for being disrespectful or improper. But, it had a musicality to it that felt ancient, powerful, and African.

In my meeting after watching the film, I asked Nate Moore, one of the producers of the film, about the language. ‘Did you guys make it up?’ Nate replied, ‘that’s Xhosa, John Kani’s native language. He and Chad decided to do the scene like that on set, and we rolled with it.’ I thought to myself. ‘He just learned lines in another language, that day?’ I couldn’t conceive how difficult that must have been, and even though I hadn’t met Chad, I was already in awe of his capacity as actor.

I learned later that there was much conversation over how T’Challa would sound in the film. The decision to have Xhosa be the official language of Wakanda was solidified by Chad, a native of South Carolina, because he was able to learn his lines in Xhosa, there on the spot. He also advocated for his character to speak with an African accent, so that he could present T’Challa to audiences as an African king, whose dialect had not been conquered by the West.

I finally met Chad in person in early 2016, once I signed onto the film. He snuck past journalists that were congregated for a press junket I was doing for Creed, and met with me in the green room. We talked about our lives, my time playing football in college, and his time at Howard studying to be a director, about our collective vision for T’Challa and Wakanda. We spoke about the irony of how his former Howard classmate Ta-Nehisi Coates was writing T’Challa’s current arc with Marvel Comics. And how Chad knew Howard student Prince Jones, whose murder by a police officer inspired Coates’ memoir Between The World and Me.

I noticed then that Chad was an anomaly. He was calm. Assured. Constantly studying. But also kind, comforting, had the warmest laugh in the world, and eyes that seen much beyond his years, but could still sparkle like a child seeing something for the first time.

That was the first of many conversations. He was a special person. We would often speak about heritage and what it means to be African. When preparing for the film, he would ponder every decision, every choice, not just for how it would reflect on himself, but how those choices could reverberate. ‘They not ready for this, what we are doing…’ ‘This is Star Wars, this is Lord of the Rings, but for us… and bigger!’ He would say this to me while we were struggling to finish a dramatic scene, stretching into double overtime. Or while he was covered in body paint, doing his own stunts. Or crashing into frigid water, and foam landing pads. I would nod and smile, but I didn’t believe him. I had no idea if the film would work. I wasn’t sure I knew what I was doing. But I look back and realize that Chad knew something we all didn’t. He was playing the long game. All while putting in the work. And work he did.

He would come to auditions for supporting roles, which is not common for lead actors in big budget movies. He was there for several M’Baku auditions. In Winston Duke’s, he turned a chemistry read into a wrestling match. Winston broke his bracelet. In Letitia Wright’s audition for Shuri, she pierced his royal poise with her signature humor, and would bring about a smile to T’Challa’s face that was 100% Chad.

While filming the movie, we would meet at the office or at my rental home in Atlanta, to discuss lines and different ways to add depth to each scene. We talked costumes, military practices. He said to me ‘Wakandans have to dance during the coronations. If they just stand there with spears, what separates them from Romans?’ In early drafts of the script. Eric Killmonger’s character would ask T’Challa to be buried in Wakanda. Chad challenged that and asked, what if Killmonger asked to be buried somewhere else?

Chad deeply valued his privacy, and I wasn’t privy to the details of his illness. After his family released their statement, I realized that he was living with his illness the entire time I knew him. Because he was a caretaker, a leader, and a man of faith, dignity and pride, he shielded his collaborators from his suffering. He lived a beautiful life. And he made great art. Day after day, year after year. That was who he was. He was an epic firework display. I will tell stories about being there for some of the brilliant sparks till the end of my days. What an incredible mark he’s left for us.

I haven’t grieved a loss this acute before. I spent the last year preparing, imagining and writing words for him to say, that we weren’t destined to see. It leaves me broken knowing that I won’t be able to watch another close-up of him in the monitor again or walk up to him and ask for another take.

It hurts more to know that we can’t have another conversation, or facetime, or text message exchange. He would send vegetarian recipes and eating regimens for my family and me to follow during the pandemic. He would check in on me and my loved ones, even as he dealt with the scourge of cancer.

In African cultures we often refer to loved ones that have passed on as ancestors. Sometimes you are genetically related. Sometimes you are not. I had the privilege of directing scenes of Chad’s character, T’Challa, communicating with the ancestors of Wakanda. We were in Atlanta, in an abandoned warehouse, with bluescreens, and massive movie lights, but Chad’s performance made it feel real. I think it was because from the time that I met him, the ancestors spoke through him. It’s no secret to me now how he was able to skillfully portray some of our most notable ones. I had no doubt that he would live on and continue to bless us with more. But it is with a heavy heart and a sense of deep gratitude to have ever been in his presence, that I have to reckon with the fact that Chad is an ancestor now. And I know that he will watch over us, until we meet again.”

Underwood’s My Gift features a world-class orchestra led by David Campbell. Pulling out all the stops for this Christmas album, acclaimed gospel quartet The McCrary Sisters – who have performed backing vocals on previous Underwood songs including “Choctaw County Affair” and “The Champion” – will also be heard on the album.

“I’ve always wanted to make a Christmas album and it’s been a long time coming,” stated Underwood. “I knew this would be my next music project after wrapping my tour last year, and I think it’s turned out to be the perfect time for an album like this, in this period of such personal and spiritual reflection. For me, it’s more important than ever to focus on the true meaning of Christmas in a project like this. Even though it has been a tough year for all of us, sometimes I feel like the greatest realizations can be inspired by the most difficult times, and make us more grateful for the things we do have and for what truly matters.”

The tracklist for My Gift includes the new original song “Let There Be Peace” available now as wel as a track with Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award winner John Legend on the classic song, “Hallelujah.”

‘Centigrade’ Movie Review: Chilly Thriller Doesn’t Quite Deliver

Centrigrade

There are some basic fears most everyone has…fear of rejection, fear of death, and for some fear of enclosed spaces. It’s the last two that are the focus of the dramatic thriller, Centigrade. Co-writer Brendan Walsh (Nurse Jackie) makes his feature film directorial debut with this indie loosely inspired by tales of people trapped in the snow and their desperate struggles to survive.

The film stars Vincent Piazza as Matt and Genesis Rodriguez as Naomi, a married couple who wake up in their rented SUV to find themselves trapped due to a massive storm burying them under layers of snow and ice. The couple had been driving in Norway through the artic mountains during a blinding blizzard and pulled over to wait it out. Unfortunately, they fell asleep and the storm buried them alive.

Naomi, who is eight months pregnant, thinks they should break a window and try to walk 50 miles to the nearest town. Matt, however, believes it’s safer to wait for help. He thinks that when Naomi doesn’t show up for her book signing (she’s a novelist out on tour), they are sure to be missed and someone will come looking.

After a short argument (many more will occur over the course of the film), Naomi agrees and Matt begins sorting their food and water supply which should last them for 12 days. As the days and nights slowly pass, Naomi and Matt find themselves constantly arguing and bickering. Naomi is keeping secrets and makes mistake after mistake while Matt continues to refuse to try to escape the SUV which is both their lifeboat from the deadly elements and their prison.

Centigrade strives to be a claustrophobic, dramatic thriller but lacks interesting characters and any real tension. Piazza and Rodriguez give solid performances as the young couple trapped in the deadly situation, but their characters and the history of their relationship are never delved into via flashback or even in dialogue. Instead, the script presents them as simplistic and shallow, with Naomi being a nagging, fatalistic novelist and Matt her meek, put-upon husband trying to do what he can to help them survive. With the couple having argument after argument about simple and insignificant topics instead of conversations about plans for their baby or stories of how they met or their life back home, it’s nearly impossible to connect with the characters.

The film’s pacing is painfully slow and it feels as though we’re spending much more than an hour and a half watching the events unfold. The lighting on the exterior shots of the snow and ice-covered road and mountains is too dark and too white to make anything out. Director Walsh does make a solid effort to keep the film visually interesting, given most of the action happens inside the SUV. Particularly effective are the shots of Matt up close to a window trying to get snow from the outside when their food supply dwindles as well as the use of candles inside to light up the darkness at night.

Centigrade‘s biggest failure is its inability to capture and bring alive the severe effects of claustrophobia, the intensity of cabin fever, and any real sense of dread or terror during what’s supposed to be a life and death situation.

‘Big Mouth’ Adds Ayo Edebiri as the Voice of Missy

In June 2020, Jenny Slate announced she was leaving the Netflix animated TV series Big Mouth and would no longer be voicing one of the lead characters, “Missy.” The Emmy-nominated series just announced Ayo Edebiri has signed on to take over the character and will do so beginning with season four’s penultimate episode.

Jenny Slate posted an explanation behind her departure from the series in June on Instagram. In the post, she stated, “I have come to the decision today that I can no longer play the characters of ‘Missy’ on the animated TV show Big Mouth. At the start of the show, I reasoned with myself that it was permissible for me to play ‘Missy’ because her mom is Jewish and white — as am I. But ‘Missy’ is also Black, and Black characters on an animated show should be played by Black people. I acknowledge how my original reasoning was flawed, that it existed as an example of white privilege and unjust allowances made within a system of societal white supremacy, and that in me playing ‘Missy,’ I was engaging in an act of erasure of Black people. Ending my portrayal of ‘Missy’ is one step in a life-long process of uncovering the racism in my actions.”

Per Netflix’s official casting announcement, Ayo Edebiri has joined the show’s writer’s room for season five. Season four is expected to arrive this fall, and Netflix has already renewed the critically acclaimed adult comedy through season six.

Ayo Edebiri’s credits include a role on the upcoming second season of Dickinson, voicing the lead in Netflix’s We Lost Our Human, and as co-host of the Iconography podcast. She’s also a co-producer on Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s Mulligan, a new Netflix animated series.

A Look Back at Season 3, Courtesy of Netflix:

In Season 3, Big Mouth focuses on what’s like to be going through puberty now. The show continues exploring human sexuality and everything around it, tackling issues such as cell phone addiction, female anger, the vast spectrum of sexuality, Adderall abuse, dick pics, toxic masculinity, and of course “how to have an orgasm.”

As the end of seventh grade rapidly approaches, Thandie Newton shakes things up as Missy’s new Hormone Monstress, and Ali Wong joins the cast as a new student who makes everyone at Bridgeton Middle question their sexuality. The season culminates with a superhero showdown that brings long-simmering tensions to a head and tests even the strongest friendships.
