‘Big Sky’ Season 1 Episode 8 Recap: “The End is Near”

Big Sky Season 1 Episode 8
Katheryn Winnick and Guy Fauchon in ‘Big Sky’ season 1 episode 8 (ABC/Darko Sikman)

Cassie (Kylie Bunbury) and Jenny (Katheryn Winnick) creep up the stairs at Rick Legarski’s house, guns drawn, as ABC’s Big Sky season one episode eight begins. Episode seven ended with Merilee recognizing a sketch of Ronald and informing the private detectives the man they’re searching for is in her house. However, by the time they get to the master bedroom Ronald has disappeared.

An open window indicates Ronald’s escape path.

Cassie and Jenny find Rick’s hidden storage space and realize the man they’re hunting removed something from it. Cassie also finds a life-size cutout of Rick just standing in a room which, quite understandably, freaks her out.

A short while later, Sheriff Walter Tubb (Patrick Gallagher) and his men arrive to investigate. Merilee (Brooke Smith) claims she doesn’t know the man’s real name or the type of vehicle he was driving. She continues to insist she’s not involved in any of this and only struck up a friendship with the man because he seemed nice.

Ronald (Brian Geraghty) arrives home after driving like a bat out of hell. His dead mom’s still seated in front of the television. He straps her to a chair and moves her down to the basement.

Over at the hospital, it appears Rick’s condition is improving. His lawyer, Penelope Denesuk (Karin Konoval), fills him in on what’s happening with his truck driver accomplice. She informs him the man was in his house and is now on the run and considered extremely dangerous. She asks if he remembers the man’s name or anything about him, but Rick (John Carroll Lynch) claims he doesn’t know anything.

Penelope suggests a polygraph might help them in court – if he passes it. If he doesn’t, she won’t tell anyone. Merilee arrives with news the police believe she’s involved. Penelope believes Merilee should get an attorney and, in the meantime, not give any statements to anyone.

Ronald watches as the news reports a statewide manhunt is underway. Ronald takes offense when they describe him as depraved, slamming dishes to the floor in anger.

An adorable newspaper boy is delivering the Helena Herald when he stops and stares at the drawing of the unidentified trucker on the front page. The boy, Erik (Evan Whitten), heads over to Ronald’s place and tosses a paper on the front stairs. Ronald steps outside to grab it and immediately notices the sketch. He looks around and appears not to notice the newspaper boy is secretly snapping photos with his cell phone.

Oops, he did notice and grabs Erik before he can run away. Ronald tosses the boy into a cage in the basement and Erik quickly comes up with a reason why he was taking photos, claiming it’s for a school project about his job. Ronald knows he’s lying and Erik warns people know where he is and will be coming for him.

Meanwhile, Jerrie (Jesse James Keitel) helps out Jenny narrow down possible big rigs. Tubb joins them to fill them in on Merilee. He hopes Cassie will talk to her now that she’s lawyering up.

And speaking of Cassie, she’s doing her best to get Rick’s doctor to confirm his patient’s condition. He insists he doesn’t know what’s going on in Rick’s brain just as Rick’s lawyer appears.

Rick gets wired up for the polygraph and although he’s way too chatty, he appears to pass the test.

Cassie, Jenny, and Tubb discuss the news Rick’s lawyer wants him to sit for an official polygraph. They’re aware this means he’s passed an unofficial one and might not actually remember anything. Cassie still believes he’s faking it. Unfortunately, cops trust polygraphs which means if Rick passes, he’ll be found incompetent to stand trial and be sent to a psych facility.

Tubb wants to let it play out, but Cassie and Jenny aren’t about to let Rick get away with basically a slap on the wrist. Cassie wants a face-to-face with Rick to see his reaction.

Cassie’s disguised as a doctor when she enters Rick’s room, complete with a mask. She closes the blinds and removes the mask, demanding he look at her. He doesn’t react at all. She tests him by using his own words against him, trying to force a reaction. Cassie has him squeeze her fingers and then launches into a countdown to five – just as he did immediately before she shot him.

Cassie leans in and tells him her real name. Rick gets choked up and asks if he shot her with an arrow.

Cassie’s convinced Rick didn’t recognize her. She believes he’s mentally gone. Jenny remains unconvinced and wants to test him herself.

Erik’s mom, Rachel, visits the detective agency and tells Denise (Dedee Pfeiffer) her son is missing. She reveals he called earlier and said he knew someone in the paper, but she was busy at work. He also mentioned a reward and that he thinks he knows where the person lives. Rachel spots the drawing in a nearby paper and realizes who her son was talking about.

Cassie, Jenny, and Tubb question Rachel and she admits she’s not sure he said it was someone on his route. They grab a list of newspaper subscribers, believing it’s the best place to start. Rachel blames herself for not really listening to Erik when he called.

Big Sky Season 1 Episode 8

Ronald admits to Erik he’s not sure what he’s going to do with him. A ringing doorbell cuts short their conversation.

Ronald slaps tape over Erik’s mouth and locks his cage before heading upstairs to greet a priest (John Kapelos) who’s checking on his mom after she missed a meeting. Ronald claims she’s off visiting her sick sister and the priest isn’t buying it. He admits Ronald’s mom said there was something going on with his son.

Ronald’s forced to invite the priest in and he hints at what Ronald’s mom told him. Ronald’s dislike for the priest is evident and he accuses the priest of trying to drown him as a child.

Erik struggles against the bars in his cage, attempting to make noise. He figures out a way to scoot the cage across the floor and over to the workbench.

The priest hears the noise and Ronald insists it’s just his dog. Erik spots Ronald’s dead mom and screams bloody murder, a scream that can be heard upstairs despite the tape firmly secured over his mouth. Ronald rushes downstairs and threatens to kill Erik if he doesn’t stay still and be quiet.

The priest follows Ronald and spots the boy. He runs back upstairs and tries to escape but Ronald tases him. Still, he continues to fight against his attacker, but Ronald ultimately gets the upper hand.

Ronald drowns the priest in his kitchen sink and tosses the body downstairs.

The news reports on the amber alert issued for 12-year-old Erik Westergaard. The police are asking the public to report anything suspicious. The amber alert includes a warning that Erik’s in grave danger.

Cassie, Jenny, and Denise are discussing how desperate Ronald must feel if he stooped to kidnapping a young boy. Jerrie walks in just as they’re talking about it and can’t believe her abductor took another person. Jerrie admits she might be losing her mind; she’s been seeing this man everywhere.

Once more to the hospital we go and Jenny fakes being Rick’s sister to gain admittance to his room. His attorney yells for the guard to take Jenny away, but she won’t budge. She wants 30 seconds and Rick okays it after Jenny tells him he shot her husband. The attorney warns him he’s not competent enough to make this decision.

“That’s his game, isn’t it?” says Jenny. “He’s competent enough to kill, competent enough to dump a body in a hole but to be held accountable… He was my husband. We have a son – a son who is grieving the loss of his father.”

Jenny gets within inches of Rick’s face as she asks, “Are you competent enough to understand…”

The officer pulls her away before she can finish her question. Rick seems genuinely sorry as he says if he did what she says, he hopes to die as well.

Cassie remains firm in her belief Rick’s gone, but Jenny won’t accept that. She confesses she’ll kill him if he’s set free.

Panic is setting in for poor Erik, but he tries to collect himself enough to act. He’s still gagged, his hands are still tied, and he’s locked up in a cage with two dead bodies nearby, yet the kid remains determined to escape.

Cassie meets with Merilee who acknowledges she knows Cassie’s there to question her. Merilee continues to say she has nothing to do with the trucker or the kidnappings, and Cassie confirms she doesn’t believe Merilee’s involved. Cassie wonders if Merilee can think of anything Rick would have hidden that the man would have been after and asks if there are any other clues she might have overlooked as to his identity.

Merilee doesn’t believe her husband’s faking his amnesia and blames herself for “Mitchell” targeting her. She also confesses she thinks Mitchell actually felt something for her and she’s grateful he made her feel she’s alive.

Cassie hands her a photo of Erik and says they need to keep him alive.

Ronald conducts a Q&A with Erik, demanding to know the truth. If he lies, he dies. Erik admits he told his mom he recognized the sketch but didn’t tell her Ronald’s name or address. Ronald leans in and Erik shoots him with a staple gun. Erik holds up a taser and promises to use it if Ronald touches him again.

Ronald grabs a gas can and pours out its contents around the basement and on the dead priest’s body while singing “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”

Merilee returns to the hospital to show Rick the photo of Erik. She asks again for his accomplice’s identity, but he continues to claim he doesn’t remember. She reminds him about his old philosophies and how he loved to talk about morality and justice. She pats his hand and tells him, “Your humanity needs to rise up now, Rick. You’re the only one who can save this boy.”

Rick either won’t or can’t reveal Ronald’s identity.

Merilee watches as Rick’s hand beats a drumbeat on the bed. She takes that in and seems to come to a conclusion as to Rick’s amnesia.

‘Prodigal Son’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: “Bad Manners”

Prodigal Son Season 2 Episode 5

Fox’s Prodigal Son season two episode five opens with a flashback to Ainsley as a young girl. She makes her mom and dad frantic with worry while playing a game of hide and seek with Malcolm. The grandfather clock makes an odd sound as it strikes midnight and Martin figures out Ainsley’s hiding inside the clock’s cabinet.

Jessica (Bellamy Young) jerks awake with that memory fresh in her head.

Malcolm (Tom Payne) meets up with Gil (Lou Diamond Phillips) for the start of a new murder investigation. He’s in a fine mood on this cloudy NY morning, but Gil’s not so chipper. Two bodies within 24 hours means no one will be getting much sleep.

The press – including Ainsley (Halston Sage) – are already at the crime scene and want to know if the police are close to finding out the Bridal Butcher’s identity. They’re not, and Gil won’t comment.

The murder victim is dressed in a wedding gown and laying on a blanket of flowers. It appears it’s just Gil, Malcolm, and Edrisa (Keiko Agena) on the case as JT’s busy with his union rep and Dani’s working vice. The victim’s in her 20s and there aren’t any marks on her body. Makeup was used to cover a birthmark, which is similar to the first body. And, both victims were dressed in wedding gowns. Malcolm believes the dresses are custom as no shop came forward to identify the first dress.

He deduces the murderer is a male in his 30s or 40s with serious psycho-sexual issues. The killer intended the victims to appear unspoiled or unobtainable. This is definitely the work of a serial killer.

After the examination, Ainsley demands to know why Malcolm’s avoiding her. She thinks their mom did something, but Martin denies anything’s up. In order to get her to stop the personal questions, he discloses the dresses and gloves were custom. Ainsley wonders if the gloves were elbow-length and Malcolm confirms they were. She figures out the victims are dressed as debutantes not brides.

Jessica pays a visit to Martin (Michael Sheen), upset he knew about Ainsley killing Nicholas and didn’t tell her. Martin lets slip Malcolm told him all about it and he even helped Malcolm figure out what to do with the body. Jessica and Martin acknowledge they knew Ainsley was capable of something like this, and Jessica blames it all on Martin. Jessica says she’s taking Ainsley away and will never allow her to see her dad again.

Gil and Malcolm join Edrisa at the coroner’s office to discuss the two dead women. Both had Rohypnol in their systems and both women died of asphyxiation. Edrisa believes a “debreather” was used and Malcolm thinks that makes sense. The date rape drug would knock them out and the debreather (normally used in assisted suicide) would kill them. Neither would leave a mark.

Malcolm points out one of the victims had one blue and one brown eye, yet the autopsy report indicates two blue eyes. It turns out the killer replaced the brown eye with a glass blue eye. Malcolm surmises the killer did so because he wanted her to be perfect.

“This isn’t about rejection for our killer. It’s about idolization,” says Malcolm.

Edrisa removes the fake blue eye.

Back at the station, Malcolm asks JT (Frank Harts) about his meeting and learns if JT makes his report official, he and the racist cop will be suspended for 20 days. Malcolm doesn’t understand why JT would be punished, and JT explains the force protects its own.

On to the case… JT’s learned the fake blue eye was a doll eye. Malcolm adds to the serial killer’s profile the fact he might have had a deep childhood trauma. Gil arrives with news both victims attended the Windsor School of Etiquette and both were debs.

Ainsley attended that school which makes Malcolm the perfect choice to check it out while Gil and JT head off to talk to dollmakers.

Martin rings up his son, upset Malcolm didn’t warn him Jessica knows Ainsley killed Nicholas. Martin’s concerned about Jessica’s plan which is to hide Ainsley in a European resort, but Malcolm knows Ainsley won’t leave while there’s a serial killer to investigate.

They discuss the victims and Martin explains debs are put under a lot of stress and there are a lot of attempted suicides. Malcolm recalls Ainsley was bullied because of Martin’s crimes and her time at Windsor was rough on her.

The dollmaker’s workshop is super creepy and JT regrets not investigating Windsor with Malcolm. The dollmaker, Trevor Falvey (Christopher Denham), claims not to recognize the eyeball but they know he’s lying. Gil also knows the dollmaker had a prior arrest for indecent exposure years ago and Trevor claims he was struggling with his faith back then.

Malcolm heads over to Windsor and Ainsley’s already there. He’s annoyed she’s being so competitive about solving these murders but shies away from continued questioning after asking how she feels about the dead women.

Sarah Windsor (Kate Burton) joins them and reveals she thinks of her students like family. That said, she’s heard whispers of parties and drugs.

Malcolm and Ainsley compete for her attention and Malcolm’s finally able to get access to her files on the school’s students. While waiting he spots a doll standing in the hallway. A young woman introduces herself as Rachel and hands over the admission files while claiming the doll’s hers. Apparently, all of the students are given dolls. (They represent being “silent and perfect.”)

Rachel confirms the school’s dollmaker is Trevor Falvey.

Malcolm calls Gil about Falvey’s connection. Trevor’s attempting to escape as Gil hangs up the phone, but JT manages to tackle him. They believe he was running away with a young woman, but it was actually a life-sized sex doll.

Later, Ainsley calls her old classmates looking for leads. Jessica confesses she doesn’t like her daughter being so caught up in murder cases and suggests they run off to one of Grandma Milton’s estates. Ainsley declines the offer and wants to continue her investigation.

During his interrogation, Gil reveals they found human-size eyeballs and lots of photos of Windsor students. Trevor claims Ms. Windsor sent him the photos so he could match the dolls’ eye colors to the students. Plus, he claims the life-size sex dolls are also something he works on for special custom orders.

Malcolm interrupts the interrogation by arriving with the head of the doll Trevor was trying to steal. We learn her name’s Dolores and she was Trevor’s first.

Malcolm and Gil step out for a moment and Malcolm explains Trevor has Agalmatophilia. Trevor’s formed a romantic attachment to Dolores, but he’s not the serial killer.

Malcolm visits his dad, again, and admits he’s worried about Ainsley’s determination to solve the case. He doesn’t like that she’s treating this like a race, and Martin thinks Malcolm’s worried Ainsley will beat him to the killer. The discussion turns to Nicholas’ murder and Martin wonders if Ainsley might end up being proud of herself when she remembers what happened.

And while this conversation’s taking place, Ainsley’s visiting an old Windsor schoolmate named Violet. She finds her friend deceased and seated in front of a mirror dressed in a gorgeous gown and elbow-length gloves.

Ainsley goes on air and delivers the scoop she’s found the third victim.

Of course, that earns Ainsley a visit to Gil’s office. Gil’s upset but Ainsley quickly delivers a business card for her network’s lawyers. Malcolm can’t believe she shot footage after finding a dead body, but Ainsley doesn’t seem in the least bit upset.

She explains she contacted her old Windsor friends and Violet admitted she was scared. Violet asked to speak in person. Ainsley’s phone’s been lighting up as they speak, with everyone from her network to her agent and Jessica trying to reach her. Gil demands her phone and its footage but Ainsley doesn’t turn it over. Instead, she sends Gil the footage along with screenshots of her text messages.

Malcolm warns his sister she’s being reckless, but Ainsley remains determined to catch the killer.

Jessica hustles over to the station and shocks Gil when she asks if Ainsley’s “involved.” He doesn’t understand what she means and Jessica plays it off, claiming she’s losing her mind over worry. Gil can’t believe Jessica turned to Martin for advice and reminds her he’s there for her – no matter what.

Malcolm’s puzzling over clues when a very caffeinated Edrisa (she’s on a two-day bender) arrives to offer help. She wonders if Malcolm checked out victim #3’s phone and he realizes Ainsley unlocked it and might have found something. The police also unlocked it and he and Edrisa look over the records. Edrisa points out a 736 number and says those are old. 73 used to mean PE – Pennsylvania Exchange – so it’s definitely been around a while.

Malcolm figures out it could be a number from the Windsor school; it turns out it’s one number off from their main phone number. Ainsley must have gone to the school after learning this which worries Malcolm since he’s now settled on Sarah Windsor as the killer. (Nothing about Sarah matches his profile.)

Malcolm believes Ainsley might be Ms. Windsor’s next victim!

A gloved hand is revealed adding a drug to a pot of tea.

Ainsley and Sarah Windsor sit down for tea and a chat which Ainsley secretly records. Sarah admits she called Violet but only because they’re reaching out to graduates to raise money for the academy.

Their chat’s interrupted by Rachel arriving with news the police have returned. Ainsley asks that they don’t tell Malcolm she’s there and Ms. Windsor assures her they won’t.

Meanwhile, Gil accompanies JT for a meeting with the union rep and the racist cop. The officer claims he isn’t prejudiced, but JT isn’t allowing him to get by with that. The rep warns this won’t end well for either of them. JT decides not to file a complaint and speaks directly to the racist cop. “You’re scared and that’s why you’re such a miserable cop. That hatred you feel is poison, but I’m not going to let it poison my life, too,” says JT.

Sarah Windsor answers the door and denies Ainsley’s inside. She attempts to shut him out but Malcolm barges in while calling her a liar. Malcolm uses Ms. Windsor’s own etiquette lessons against her, acknowledging she wouldn’t have turned her back on him unless there’s something going on.

While they’re in a debate over manners at the door, Ainsley’s attempting to get the scoop from Rachel.

Malcolm reveals the phone calls from the private number and Sarah suddenly realizes the killer must be her assistant, Rachel. She sends Malcolm off to check on Ainsley in the tearoom. When he arrives there, Ainsley’s gone.

Rachel shows Ainsley her room while confessing she’s been calling alumni. She claims she just wants to save the school. The drugs take effect and Ainsley passes out on Rachel’s bed. Malcolm finds Rachel’s room via a secret passageway and watches through cracks as Rachel places a debreather on the bed. His phone vibrating gives away that he’s nearby and Rachel yells out that she has a gun.

Sarah Windsor appears to be in the midst of a breakdown, shattering photos and talking to herself about no one knowing the truth.

Malcolm enters the room and assures Rachel he’s there for Ainsley. He notices she has a list with the victims’ names crossed out. Malcolm realizes Sarah Windsor is Rachel’s mom. Since Ms. Windsor didn’t love her the way she did her students, Rachel channeled her anger against the dead women.

Malcolm notices Ainsley’s eyes pop open but doesn’t acknowledge that and instead keeps Rachel occupied. Rachel aims her gun at Malcolm’s head as he tries to talk her down.

Ainsley quietly gets to her feet while clutching a knife. Malcolm is begging both Rachel and Ainsley not to do this and Rachel finally notices Ainsley behind her. She smacks Ainsley across the face with the gun, knocking her back onto the bed.

Rachel’s about to shoot her when Malcolm slams against her, causing the bullet to miss Ainsley.

Ainsley’s okay and Rachel’s knocked out.

All this is going on as Sarah Windsor is turning on gas lamps without lighting them.

Malcolm smells the gas and races out of the room with his sister while lugging Rachel over his shoulder. They make it outside and look up at Sarah Windsor in the window as she strikes a match.

Ms. Windsor and her School of Etiquette are consumed in flames.

A short while later Ainsley explains she knew she was being roofied so she acted drowsy. She claims victory, telling her brother she solved the case first. Malcolm’s still upset she put herself in danger and Ainsley confesses she wanted to know why the killer did it.

Jessica visits Martin again and he’s happy both kids got wins. She’s realized she can’t take Ainsley away and they both admit Ainsley’s more unstable than Malcolm. Jessica begs Martin to help her save their kids and he assures her they will do it together. “There’s nothing I won’t do to save my family,” says Martin.

“We are thrilled that HBO Max has not only given the world a fifth season of Search Party but also shown this much faith in our partnership with them as we develop new projects for the platform,” stated executive producers Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers. “Potential titles for upcoming shows include ‘Monkeys Love Manhattan’ and ‘The Pineapple Predicament.’ Those aren’t actual shows we would ever pitch but it exhibits that we can make up titles if we need to.”

“Charles and Sarah-Violet are the masters of genre-blending and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next!” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max. “It’s been a joy working with them – they are whip-smart, wildly funny, and have such a distinctive worldview – we couldn’t be happier that they are continuing to call HBO Max their home.”

The cast is led by Alia Shawkat and includes John Reynolds, John Early, and Meredith Hagner. Sarah-Violet Bliss, Charles Rogers, Michael Showalter, Lilly Burns, and Tony Hernandez serve as executive producers.

The Plot, Courtesy of HBO Max:

The first three seasons followed best friends “Dory” (Shawkat), “Drew” (Reynolds), “Elliott” (Early) and “Portia” (Hagner) through a messy private investigation, semi-accidental murder, absurd cover-up and sensational trial. In season four, Dory was held prisoner by her psychotic stalker “Chip” (Cole Escola), forcing Drew, Elliott and Portia to once again become a search party – but this time, for Dory.

Hulu’s The Great star Elle Fanning took to Instagram to show off what’s in store for her character in the upcoming second season. “Cooking up something special for season 2 #TheGreat #firstlook” wrote Fanning while releasing the first photo of Empress Catherine the Great in the new season.

Nicholas Hoult returns as Peter for the series’ second season. The cast also includes Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow.

Fanning and Hoult earned Golden Globe nominations for their performances in the series, and The Great also earned a Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy nomination. Matt Shakman scored an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series category and Tony McNamara earned an Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series Emmy nomination. Hoult just picked up a Critics Choice Awards Best Actor in a Comedy Series nomination and the cast received a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category.

Hulu released the following synopsis of The Great:

The Great is a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. Season one is a fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter.

In season two, Catherine becomes both a mother to Russia and a child.”
