‘The Little Things’ Trailer Arrives Starring Denzel Washington

How many Oscar winners can you pack into starring roles in a dramatic thriller? The Little Things trailer provides the answer to that question: Three.

The psychological thriller from writer/director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, Saving Mr. Banks) stars two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington (Training Day, Glory), Oscar winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), and Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

The cast also includes Natalie Morales (Battle of the Sexes), Terry Kinney (Billions), Chris Bauer (Sully, The Deuce), Joris Jarsky (Bad Blood), Isabel Arraiza (Pearson), and Michael Hyatt (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). Writer/director Hancock and Oscar winner Mark Johnson (Rain Man) produce, with Mike Drake and Kevin McCormick executive producing.

Hancock’s behind the scenes team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography John Schwartzman (Seabiscuit), two-time Oscar-nominated production designer Michael Corenblith (Apollo 13, How the Grinch Stole Christmas), ACE-winning editor Robert Frazen (The ’60s), Emmy-winning costume designer Daniel Orlandi (The Magic of David Copperfield XI: The Explosive Encounter), and 15-time Oscar-nominated composer Thomas Newman.

Warner Bros. Pictures has set a January 29, 2021 release date in theaters and on HBO Max.

The Plot:

Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt, L.A. Sheriff Department Sergeant Jim Baxter (Malek), impressed with Deke’s cop instincts, unofficially engages his help. But as they track the killer, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case.

FX Gives Taika Waititi’s ‘Reservation Dogs’ Comedy a Series Order

Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo’s Reservation Dogs has received a series order from FX. The half-hour comedy, which I’m going to have to really concentrate on not calling Reservoir Dogs, is expected to join FX’s primetime schedule in 2021.

According to FX’s official announcement, season one will consist of eight episodes.

What We Do in the Shadows‘ Taika Waititi and Mekko‘s Sterlin Harjo are writing and executive producing the comedy. Harjo directed the pilot which was filming in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Garrett Basch (The Night Of, What We Do in the Shadows) is also on board as an executive producer of the FX Productions project.

“Sterlin Harjo draws deeply on his experiences as a Native Oklahoman to make Reservation Dogs a true-to-life and incredibly funny story of youth, courage and misadventures,” said Nick Grad, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment. “Taika Waititi lends his considerable talents to the series, helping Sterlin and their creative partner Garrett Basch produce a unique and original series we can’t wait for audiences to see.”

“As longtime friends, it was only natural that Taika and I found a project together, and what better than a show that celebrates the complementary storytelling styles of our indigenous communities – mine in Oklahoma and Taika’s in Aotearoa,” said Harjo. “We’re thrilled by the opportunity to tell the Reservation Dogs‘ story with our amazing cast and crew, Garrett Basch, and the whole team at FX.”

The series follows four Native teenagers in rural Oklahoma who spend their days committing crime… and fighting it. D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Creeped Out) stars as Bear, Devery Jacobs (American Gods) plays Elora Danan, Paulina Alexis (Beans) is Willie Jack, and newcomer Lane Factor plays Cheese.

Episode one will feature guest stars Tamara Podemski, Zahn McClarnon, Macon Blair, Kirk Fox, Matty Cardarople, Dallas Goldtooth, Lil Mike, and Funny Bone.

The sci-fi fantasy drama His Dark Materials has been renewed for a third season, as just confirmed by HBO and BBC One. Season two premiered on November 16, 2020 and season three is expected to begin shooting in Cardiff in 2021.

The renewal order comes a week ahead of the season two finale set to air on Monday, December 28, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT.

“Bringing Phillip Pullman’s epic, intricate and culturally resonant body of work to television has been a tremendous privilege,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming. “We thank our incredible partners at the BBC and the entire Bad Wolf team, led by the indefatigable Jane Tranter, for their exceptional work on the first two seasons. Review: ‘Promising Young Woman’ is a Bold, Effective Revenge Thriller

Promising Young Woman Carey Mulligan
Carey Mulligan stars as “Cassandra” in director Emerald Fennell’s ‘Promising Young Woman’ (Photo Credit: Courtesy of Focus Features)

Writer/director Emerald Fennell’s wickedly entertaining Promising Young Woman is a gratifying – albeit disturbing – revenge thriller. Carey Mulligan is brilliant as an intelligent, promising young woman who spends her nights teaching sexual predators lessons they’ll never forget.

Fennell’s best known for shepherding the terrific second season of Killing Eve as showrunner. That show’s dark humor is similar to what Fennell’s incorporated into this twisted revenge tale. They also share a similar sense of heightened reality in seemingly normal situations.

The story follows Carey Mulligan as Cassie, a former medical school student who left college following a traumatic event. That event, the description of which is withheld for the first half of the film, left Cassie damaged and no longer interested in pursuing a career in medicine. She now spends her days working at a coffee shop and her nights in bars pretending to be drunk and vulnerable. There’s no shortage of men willing to “help” this defenseless, intoxicated woman get home, and Cassie keeps a ledger of the reprobates who attempt to take advantage of her while she’s in a helpless state. These lecherous creeps are always shocked to discover Cassie’s fully in control of her senses as well as in control of their encounter.

Other than her nightly excursions to expose vulgar men who prey on vulnerable women, Cassie’s withdrawn into herself and appears to enjoy only the company of her boss, Gail (Laverne Cox), at the coffee shop. Cassie’s moved back home and her lack of ambition and depressed personality have her parents (Jennifer Coolidge and Clancy Brown) justifiably concerned about her mental state.

It’s only after Cassie begins dating handsome pediatric surgeon Ryan (Bo Burnham) – following a unique meet-cute involving spit – that her mom and dad believe there’s a chance their smart and funny daughter will re-emerge.

Ryan appears to be a nice, well-adjusted guy who makes Cassie happy. Their connection allows her to lower her defenses, relax, and breathe. The traumatic event from college doesn’t fade away but Cassie’s able to push those memories to the side and enjoy Ryan’s love and attention.

But Promising Young Woman is a revenge thriller which means a happy, healthy Cassie can’t possibly last long, right? Cassie wants/demands a reckoning for what transpired in college. As her quest for atonement takes shape, it’s impossible not to crave a just outcome for this promising young woman.

Fennell’s Promising Young Woman is full of ugly men (effectively played by Adam Brody, Sam Richardson, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) who deserve whatever Cassie dishes out. This is the perfect film for the #MeToo movement, but also the perfect film for those who love stylish, unique dark comedies. The subject matter is serious and disturbing, but Fennell manages to infuse this twisted tale with moments of unexpected hilarity – often at the most shocking of times.

In the titular role, Mulligan delivers an incredible, career-defining performance that’s complex and heart-wrenching. Mulligan plays Cassie as strong yet vulnerable, whip-smart with an edge, and with a wicked sense of humor. The film shifts tone – sometimes within a single scene – and Mulligan easily slips into Cassie’s many moods.

Focus Features’ Promising Young Woman is a brutally honest yet completely unexpected twist on the female empowerment/revenge fantasy. Don’t just read the synopsis and assume you know the score. Fennell pulls off complicated plot twists without cheating or playing loose with logic. And that final act is, well, let’s just say it’s all you could hope for and yet not in the least bit what you expected.

Peter Jackson Shares Updates on His The Beatles Documentary

Three-time Oscar winner Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) hosts a sneak peek of his upcoming The Beatles: Get Back music documentary which has – like every other film – been delayed due to Covid-19. The nearly six-minute video begins with an introduction and setup by Jackson followed by nearly four minutes of footage of The Beatles in the recording studio.

“We wanted to give the fans of The Beatles all over the world a holiday treat, so we put together this five-minute sneak peek at our upcoming theatrical film The Beatles: Get Back. We hope it will bring a smile to everyone’s faces and some much-needed joy at this difficult time,” explained Jackson.

The Beatles: Get Back is targeting an August 27, 2021 theatrical release.

The music documentary is a Walt Disney Studios, Apple Corps Ltd., and WingNut Films Productions Ltd. production. Jackson directs and also produces with Clare Olssen and Jonathan Clyde. Ken Kamins and Jeff Jones are involved as executive producers. Jackson’s behind the scenes team includes editor Jabez Olssen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Giles Martin (Rocketman) and Sam Okell (Yesterday) mixing the music.

The film showcases the warmth, camaraderie and creative genius that defined the legacy of the iconic foursome.

Shot in January 1969 and compiled from over 60 hours of unseen footage (filmed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg) and more than 150 hours of unheard audio, all of which has been brilliantly restored, The Beatles: Get Back is the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they plan their first live show in over two years and charts the writing and rehearsing of 14 new songs, originally intended for release on an accompanying live album. The film features – for the first time in its entirety – The Beatles’ last live performance as a group, the unforgettable rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row as well as other songs and classic compositions featured on the band’s final two albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be.”

Series Description, Courtesy of CBS:

Magnum P.I. is a modern take on the classic series centering on Thomas Magnum, a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. A charming rogue, an American hero and a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan, Magnum lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins, a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent whose second job is to keep Magnum in line, with the help of her two Dobermans.

When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, Theodore “TC” Calvin, a former Marine chopper pilot who runs Island Hoppers, a helicopter tour business, and Orville “Rick” Wright, a former Marine door-gunner-turned-impresario of Oahu’s coolest nightclub and the most connected man on the island.

Suspicious of Magnum’s casual attitude and presence at his crime scenes, Detective Gordon Katsumoto finds that he and Magnum are more alike than either of them care to admit. One of Magnum’s biggest supporters is Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, the unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest. With keys to a vintage Ferrari in one hand, aviator sunglasses in the other, and an Old Düsseldorf longneck chilling in the fridge, Thomas Magnum is back on the case!
